waiting for the milk

i wasn't going to write anything else this evening, but i have to wait till 10 pm tonight to go pick up some milk. i need to make yogurt and have found that the warm milk straight from the jersey moo moos works the best. i just called mr. white and he said that there will be milk at 10 pm. so wait i must. that's ok, there's still bread to bake and meatloaf to talk about. so here goes. on our way up to flat rock today we stopped at perdue's fruit farm. glorious apples are still in season, but until we make a good dent in the 500 lbs. of apples we already have, we'll have to wait a few more weeks to buy some. according to the nice lady at the stand, they will have pink lady apples up until thanksgiving weekend. ray and i both have the tuesday before the holiday off, so we have marked the calender for one last apple run. i didn't think we were going to get anything at the stand today, but then ray spotted some blackberry jam. i was also eyeballing this jar of betty's country catsup. the nice lady was telling us that this was a catsup recipe that has been in the family for about 100 years. she said that it's not so much a hamburger or hotdog catsup, but more of a sauce that you would put in something, something like say....meatloaf. i looked over at ray, his eyes wide, was he thinking what i was thinking? then he said it..."DEER MEAT!!!!" we grabbed the jar of jam and the catsup and ran. don't worry, we did pay for it first.

yummy bread from flat rock village bakery and the loot from the fruit stand.

i guess this would also be a good time to catch up on how the 3-G project is going. last week due to "the sickness," i kinda put the project on the back burner, but didn't stray to far of the path. we left off about two saturdays ago, and that is precisely when "the sickness" attacked. ray had to go to the store by himself, and since he also had to pick up the deer meat, he simply went to the ingles down the street. he got me organic saltines, organic apples juice, and regular ginger ale and picked up some cold cuts, cheese slices, and beer for himself. he estimates that, minus the beer, he spent about $15. then, last tuesday i went to earthfare for the weekly shopping. here's what i got....

more organic saltine crackers
natural ginger ale
organic fusilli pasta
mild cheddar raw milk cheese
organic vanilla bean ice cream
1 head of garlic
organic cilantro
organic sour cream
free range large brown eggs

all for $26.09. add $6 for the gallon of raw milk i got at the farmers market and the $15 ray spent, and that equals $47.09. that made me $12.91 under for the week. rock on!!

now, let's talk about this week. we didn't do any shopping this weekend at the grocery store, but we did eat out twice on saturday and got some beer and wine, but as of yet that is not included in this experiment. today we bought the jar of betty's country catsup and blackberry jam at perdue's fruit farm stand = $11, and the bread at flat rock village bakery = $6. at 10 pm i will be going to pick up the gallon of raw milk = $5.50. that brings this week's total so far to $22.50. that leaves $37.50 (please fell free to check my math if you must). i feel this week just might be a bang up week for the project. we did not go to the store today because the only thing we could think of that we needed was cereal and peanut butter. i guess i could use more coffee and ray more tea, but surely we can get that for well under $37. ok, enough of that, let's talk about the meatloaf.

remember the ass load of deer meat in the frig. well this evening we ate more it. wonder deer meat twins.... activate!!! form of.... a meat loaf!!! pair with....bread and beans!!!

bread from flat rock village bakery, left over cranberry beans, and deer meatloaf.
the meatloaf was pretty simple, but oh so yummy.

"eating the deer meat" meatloaf
1 lb. ground deer meat
1 egg
about 1/4 - 1/2 cup bread crumbs
salt and pepper
about 1/4 cup betty's country catsup
mix all together. plop it in a loaf pan and bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes

next time ray wants me to add more of the catsup and some onions. will do, cause lord knows i have enough deer meat. i also made sandwich rolls just now, so looks like meat loaf sandwiches for lunch this week. yummy!!
