whooo hoooo!!!! the big white farm stand up the road in now open!!!!! ok, so they really don't have much local produce going on right now, but i did score some tomatoes, very fresh (they still had dirt on the pods) looking peas, and a tiny thing of strawberries. aahhh.... strawberries. we should be coming out of our ears with local strawberries very soon. also, ray just sent me an e-mail to remind me that the farmers market in downtown will open for the season on may 1st. whooo hooo!!! not to mention, the friends of the library book sale is this weekend and the giant plant sale at the year round farmers market is next weekend. so i declare this the official kick off to what i call my "festival season." yeah!!!!!!! (crap, sun is coming up, excuse me a minute while i go set the tomato seedlings outside for the day.... ok now i'm back.) so, in celebration of the local food and festival season last night we had "the dinner that local made."
here's the dinner breakdown:
scrambled eggs: farm fresh pasture raised local (only 10 miles from the house) eggs.
bacon: local pasture raised pork bacon from caw caw creek farms.
strawberries: bought at the farm stand down the street, could/will be local.
homemade buckwheat pancakes: flour not local, but organically grown, and produced in USA. pancakes also made with local raw milk/butter and local eggs. (salt and baking soda not local)
maple syrup: brought back from vermont by co-worker in her suitcase. (gettin low on that.)
so that's pretty darn close to a local dinner if you ask me.
maybe one day ALL this could all come from my own farm.
plus you can't go wrong with breakfast for dinner.

i just remembered that i didn't tell you about our easter dinner. of course we had rabbit again this year. our own little sick tradition. this year i decided to try my hand at frying something. basically i pretended the rabbit was chicken, followed a few instructions from a game meat cookbook, and went to town. other than a few oil splatters here and there, damn rabbit was fightin back, i believe it was a success. so easter dinner was: fried wild caught rabbit with homemade wheat biscuits and raw milk gravy.
fried rabbit... tastes just like dark meat chicken.
ok, i will admit that it was just a tad dry. not sure if i over cooked it, or if that is just how fried rabbit is.

Oh WOW. I love the mold that the butter was pressed into! How CUTE is that? We've made our own raw milk butter for a while, but I just store it in a little dessert dish.
FRIED RABBIT!!! You're brave.
Cheers,
