Eat Eggs Save the Tomatoes

blossom end rot.

did you know this could happen? why didn't you tell me? i had no idea. well, as we all know, i am very very new to growing tomatoes. so i guess a few problems in the first year of the garden are to be expected, but this is breaking my heart. all that work from the tiny little seeds, the caring and the transplanting, mixing the soil, trying to stay on top of the watering, only to be taken down by (what i have decided to call it) rotten bottom. oh the horror!!!!!

and some of these were looking really really good. i just have to tell myself all is not lost. so i have a calcium deficiency in the soil. no biggie, let's just add some calcium. but how?? add a chemical laden tums into the soil? no thanks. pile on the egg shells and hope that will be enough?? will that be enough?? commercial organic tomato food?? more compost tea?? fish emulsion?? worm poop tea?? water, water, water???? aaaaahhhhh???!!!!!!????
luckily i did have a bowl full of egg shells ready to be crushed, so that's what i did. i gave each plant a nice little handful of shells right before a nice big wet rain. so we'll see what happens. also this weekend i am going to give each baby a nice mulching of compost and some straw to help with moisture control. if worst come to worst, apparently i can spray some water mixed with epsom salt on the leafs to help as well. once this problem has been tackled i can move on and concentrate on why i DON'T have ANY FRUIT on the hillbilly potato leaf tomato plants.

why??? WHY???
look at you growing big and strong.
why you give me no fruit????

you give me flowers.

and more flowers.

and more flowers still.
but them your flowers die, turn brown, and fall off.
why no fruit.... WHY?????

aaahhhh heaven.
i think i will come over here and sit by the martin's roma by the t.v. dish.
she's pretty with nice fruit.
not a lot of fruit, but what she's got sure looks good.

I'm just starting out as well. My mom did these every year and they always had a ton of giant tomatoes. I had no clue they did that. Ewww. Now once you added the egg shells did they come back? How are they looking? I have a few tomato plants and peppers. So far they each have (except the tomatoes) at least one vegetable on them, but that's it. Hoping I'm growing these right as I really want to use the veggies.
