i'm a freaking farmer

so last thursday (8/14/08) i took the ENTIRE day off. i though it would be a good time to plant some seed for my itty bitty fall veggie garden. ok, so i'm not a super great experienced gardener. i don't plant by the moon phase and i don't start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks proir like all the books and seed packet reccomend. i refuse to use chemicals and don't trust that the miracle grow organic soil in really "organic." here is my simple method. get some top soil (the brand that i am now using, their website stated that they don't use chemicals to accerlate the decompsiion and claims that they use substainable practices. close enough, right?) so again, top soil mixed with some sand, local "organic" mushroom compost, and a little bit of local fish poop. mix, mix, mix, throw it in a pot, planter, some sort of container, or directly on the ground. there, soil good to go. then throw some seeds in and a liite bit of water keeping the soil moist during germenation, and off we grow.

before i go any further, here is an update in regards to harvesting seeds from my bolted bok choy. origanally i bought four little bok choy seedling plants at a health food store up in hendersonville, nc, with the intention of eating them. well, we only ate one plant before the others started to bolt. i went and checked out a book from the library all about seed saving. hurt my head a bit to read it. first it says i had to have so many plants (at least six - crap, again i only had 4) in order for correct pollination and that those plants had to be so many feet away from other similar plants or what not. then let them flower, and after than, these pods would form holding in them the seeds. then, for shits sake, i have to remove them from the pods and BOIL the seeds, i guess for disease or bacteria so whatever. ok i can let them bolt, flower, grow pods, hell i will even seperate the seeds from their pods, but fuck if i am going to boil the little suckers.

so anyway, i did eventually seperate some seeds from pods and just stuck them in a jar and let it at that. then on thursday, planted them.
well low and behold, the little shits are actually sprouting.

holy poopie pants, i'm a freaking farmer!!!! heeheehee.
