i went out to the garden this evening to give the tomato plants a bit of a drinkie drink and notice that there are giant holes in my plants where leaves and stems used to be. bugger!!! well i knew the stripped naked plants were the work of a giant green worm. i knew this, not because i am a garden genius, but because i saw and destroyed two of them the other night eating my pepper plants just a few feet away. i'm not to concerned since i am planning to do the traditional labor day tomato take down this weekend and the plants are looking rather sad lately, but if there is any hope for the few remaining tomatoes to ripen in the next few days, i must find that worm!!!! (check out the groovy optical illusion below.)
there are four tomato plants in the picture above. the two in the middle are missing a bit off the top and the one on the right is missing it's bottom half. here's a comparison photo from a few weeks ago. the plant on the left is the HBPL plant. it seems untouched, for now. hopefully the two remaining HBPL tomatoes will ripen before this weekend. |
man these guys show NO mercy. look at the tops there. like they've been hacked right off in precise cuts. alright you big fat green worm, i know you're out there. i WILL find you. |
more evidence of your existence. |
there you are little bugger! behold the hornworm. better enjoy that tomato now cause in two seconds i will remove your head with my handy dandy pair of garden scissors. |
but worms or no worms, i've still gotten a pretty good harvest over the last 24 hours. |
